Introducing the John Mitchell Articulating Bar!

The Mitchell Articulating Bar is coming!
Inspired by popular demand, MD Orthopaedics has developed an articulating bar that
holds the necessary degrees of dorsiflexion and outward rotation while allowing the child
free movement of each individual leg in a way that was previously not possible.
Obviously this is breaking new ground in the world of clubfoot treatment.
Although it has been proven by decades of use that the straight bars we currently use
do not delay either fine or gross motor skills in the infants who wear them, the articulating
bars are being tested with the belief they will increase over all comfort for the child;
eliminate what was already a very small and mostly theoretical risk of potential muscle
atrophy; and increase the overall success rate of the Ponseti Method by proving more
tolerable to both parent and child than a straight bar.
All this remains to be seen, of course, but the Dobbs Dynamic Bar (see photos here)
which is also articulating (i.e. having parts that are connected by joints), has been in use
for two years already and is proving good results. I cannot imagine a bar designed by
John Mitchell and his dedicated staff providing anything less, especially when combined
with the extreme success and satisfaction already being experienced by his unique shoe
design that has taken the world by storm over the past four years.
For those children who wear the Ponseti-Mitchell clubfoot shoes, the Mitchell Articulating
Bar snaps quickly on to your existing shoes easily, replacing the ordinary flat bar that
came with your FAB. This added ease of use lets parents continue to snap their bar off
and on as necessary to facilitate such every day events as changing pants or setting
their child in and out of shopping carts. Further benefit is to those parents of children
with Atypical Clubfeet, who need the Mitchell foot abduction brace because their child
cannot tolerate the Markells - thus they could not use the Dobbs Dynamic Bar (which will
attach to the Markell shoes).
Not yet available for public purchase, MD Orthopaedics estimates this new style of
clubfoot bar will retail for approximately $125.00 in the near future, giving the parents of
children born with clubfoot one more terrific option for foot abduction bracing following
their Ponseti Method serial casting treatment.
With approximately ten children currently testing this new Mitchell articulating bar, my two
youngest boys, Everett (age 4) and Garrison (age 19 months) are here eager as ever to
demonstrate and evaluate the articulating bar's over all durability and effectiveness
across the two age ranges they represent, and as you saw, to sing the praises of their
good friends at MD Orthopaedics!
Below are some photos and videos of Everett and Garrison using the Mitchell Articulating
Bar. We are as proud and honored as ever to be given yet another opportunity to work
with John, Emily and the entire MDO company towards the betterment of clubfoot
children world wide!
As we move along with this new bar and hear from others who are using it, I will post
updates here.
Because Garrison was
asleep when the friendly
UPS guy brought the new
Mitchell Articulating Bar,
Everett had the first turn in
it...and lets be honest, a 4
year old is much more
cooperative for a camera
than a 1 year old!

small triangle start button on
the bottom-left of each
screen.
I swear, someday we're
going to see this kid in
movies!

Clubfoot correction is a journey, to say the
least, but with good doctors, good braces, and
an abundant sense of humor (some call it a stout
bottle of rum), the time will fly by!
From his first tiny little brace at around six
weeks old to wearing another tricky Mitchell
prototype at age 19 months, Garrison has
stuck it out pretty good with his crazy big
brother Everett there by his side!
And did I mention the oldest brother??? Uh,
ya, that's him!
NOTE: If it appears that these
shoes are too small for Everett,
you are right. Since Everett does
not have a FAB with snap-bar
capability (he's still living in the
dinosaur age), he is wearing
Garrison's shoe to test the bar,
and the shoes are just a little too
small for him.
